Overall SEMO Fit Assessment

85Fit Score

The strongest coaching connection of any report. New head coach John Klein is a St. Louis native, SLU alum, played for the St. Louis Ambush, and was inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame in 2026. He literally is the STL soccer community — and he's building a program from scratch two hours down I-55. In-state DI, massive defensive need, and a 4.1 GPA that stacks merit aid on top of athletic scholarship.

Roster Turnover & Positional Need

Defensive and midfield projection for Fall 2027 based on the 2024 published roster and Coach Klein's first recruiting cycles.

New Coach, Massive Turnover

John Klein was hired in January 2025 with a three-year contract to rebuild SEMO women's soccer. He inherits a program that went 3-11-3 in 2024 and was picked 9th in the OVC preseason poll for 2025. By the time the Fall 2027 class arrives, the 2024 senior class will be gone, plus the 2024 juniors who graduate after 2025-26. That means the defensive spine is almost entirely gutted — three defenders, a defensive midfielder, and the starting goalkeeper all depart before Hoefener would arrive. The 2027 class isn't just Coach Klein's next recruiting class — it's his chance to rebuild the back line from scratch.

The Size Problem

Beyond the sheer number of departures, there's a structural issue: Cayla Koerner at 5'9" was SEMO's tallest defender — and she'll be gone. Zoe Houston was 5'4". The remaining defenders on the roster range from 5'3" to 5'7". At 5'11", Hoefener would immediately be the tallest defender by at least two inches. In the OVC, where set pieces and physicality decide tight matches, that height advantage isn't a luxury — it's a structural need the current roster cannot fill internally.

Key Takeaway for Staff

By Fall 2027, SEMO loses three starting defenders, a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, and the starting goalkeeper. The midfield has returning pieces in Nelson, Serio, and Baker — but the back line is being rebuilt from scratch. At 5'11" with CDM/CB versatility and 16 assists from the holding midfield position, Hoefener fills both the defensive void and the need for a ball-progressing presence from the back. A new coach building a defense needs a physical spine. She is the spine.

STL Pipeline — Already in Place

SEMO already recruits the St. Louis metro: Laia Amat (Cottleville, MO) and Melissa Kubin (Troy, MO) are on the current roster. Coach Klein is a St. Louis native himself. Adding an ECNL player from AFA Fillies extends a natural STL-to-Cape Girardeau pipeline — one that a STL-born coach will prioritize as he reshapes the program.

Player Evaluation

Scouting assessment based on film review, statistical analysis, and competitive context.

ECNL KC 2025 — Game Highlights
Scouting Narrative

Physical Profile: At 5'11", Hoefener would immediately be the tallest defender on SEMO's roster — by at least 2 inches over every returning back. She wins aerial duels through height, strength, and timing. The 300+ game Iron Man streak confirms elite durability. In the OVC, where rosters are smaller and depth is thinner, a player who never misses matches is worth even more.

Defending: Missouri All-Region, All-Conference First Team as a sophomore — in one of the strongest high school soccer states in the country. She consistently neutralizes top attackers at the ECNL level. SEMO conceded heavily in 2024 (3-11-3). A proven lockdown defender who anchors from CDM or CB addresses the program's most pressing on-field need and gives Coach Klein a foundation to build the rest of his defense around.

Distribution: 16 assists in a single season from the CDM position — leading her entire conference, not as a winger or a 10, but as the deepest-lying midfielder on the pitch. For a rebuilding program, this is critical: a CDM who can absorb pressure and then launch the attack with penetrating passes transforms how a team plays. Coach Klein's Columbia College teams were known for possession-based play — Hoefener fits that mold.

Engine / Fitness: Cross Country All-Conference and a 3rd-place finish in the Greater St. Louis 10k confirm elite aerobic capacity. The OVC schedule includes long road trips and compressed mid-week matches. A player with this fitness base doesn't break down in October — she gets stronger.

Leadership / Culture: ECNL captain. Founder and President of Villa Duchesne's FCA chapter. Duchesne House Leader. 100+ hours of community service. For a new head coach building culture from scratch, the character and leadership profile matters as much as the on-field ability. Coach Klein has said rebuilding culture is priority one — Hoefener is the type of player who sets that standard.

Academic Fit: 4.1 GPA against SEMO's 3.53 average. 78.5% acceptance rate means zero admissions friction. Her academic over-qualification opens merit aid opportunities that stretch athletic scholarship dollars further — a meaningful advantage at an OVC program where scholarship budgets are tighter than Power conference peers.

Bidirectional Fit Analysis

The case from each side — and the honest assessment.

Why SEMO Makes Sense for Her
Coach Klein is STL soccer royalty. SLU alum, played professionally for the St. Louis Ambush and Storm, inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame in 2026. He doesn't just know the STL soccer community — he is the STL soccer community. That coaching connection is the strongest of any program in this analysis.
In-state DI — two hours from home. Cape Girardeau is a straight shot down I-55 from St. Louis. Close enough for family at matches, far enough for independence. In-state tuition (~$28K total COA) keeps the financial picture manageable before any scholarship.
Ground floor of a rebuild. Coach Klein's first recruiting classes will define the next era of SEMO soccer. Arriving in Fall 2027 means being among the first players he truly builds around — not inheriting someone else's roster, but shaping the identity from day one.
Immediate impact opportunity. Unlike SEC or Power conference programs where freshmen may sit behind established starters, SEMO's defensive need means she could start immediately and play meaningful minutes from day one.
DI scholarship + merit aid stacking. OVC programs have DI scholarship allocations. Combined with merit aid for a 4.1 GPA, the financial package can compete with programs at higher competitive levels.
558-174-63 coaching track record. Klein built a powerhouse at Columbia College (NAIA). The trajectory at SEMO may start slow, but the coach's resume says the rebuild has a real ceiling.
Why She Makes Sense for SEMO
Fills the biggest gap on the roster: tallest defender graduating, remaining backs are 5'3"–5'7". At 5'11", Hoefener gives Coach Klein the physical spine he needs to build a competitive defense.
CDM/CB versatility: Dual-position flexibility gives a new coach maximum tactical options as he shapes the system. She can anchor the back line or control the midfield depending on what the roster needs.
16-assist season from deep: A CDM who creates chances from behind the ball — exactly what a program that struggled to score in 2024 needs to unlock its attacking talent.
Culture-setter for a rebuild: ECNL captain, FCA founder, community leader. Coach Klein needs players who set the standard in training, in the locker room, and in the classroom. Her profile is that player.
In-state ECNL recruiting win: Landing an ECNL player from AFA Fillies — one of the top STL clubs — signals to the broader STL soccer community that SEMO is a serious destination. That matters for every recruiting class after her.
Merit aid efficiency: A 4.1 GPA qualifies for merit aid that stretches the athletic scholarship budget. Zero admissions friction. A coach building a roster needs financially efficient players — she checks every box.
Honest Assessment

SEMO went 3-11-3 in 2024 and was picked 9th in the OVC preseason. Those results are real and they're part of this analysis. This is not a program that's competing for conference titles right now. But the context matters: John Klein just arrived with a 558-win track record and a three-year mandate to rebuild. The STL soccer community knows who he is — his hiring was a statement of intent. For a player who wants to be part of building something, not just joining a finished product, the upside is significant. The question is whether the timeline and trajectory match her ambitions.

Why Timing Matters

Coach Klein is actively building his first full recruiting classes. The 2027 class will be the foundation of his vision for the program. A 5'11" ECNL CDM/CB from the coach's own hometown is the exact player a new staff dreams about landing. But she'll be visible to every OVC, MVC, and mid-major DI staff at the same ECNL events. Programs that move early on high-academic, high-character players tend to win them.

Opportunities for Engagement

Coach Klein's STL roots make this the most natural connection point of any program.

Why This Matters

A 5'11" ECNL-level CDM/CB with a 4.1 GPA, All-Region credentials, 16 assists from the back, elite fitness — two hours from campus, in-state tuition eligible, from the same city as the head coach. The roster needs her position. The program needs her character. The coach knows her world. These opportunities don't come around often.

01
Lead with Coach Klein's STL connection. He's a St. Louis native, SLU alum, STL Soccer Hall of Fame inductee. A personal outreach that references the shared STL soccer community — AFA, ECNL, the clubs and fields she grew up on — carries weight that no generic recruiting email can match.
02
Arrange a campus visit via I-55. Cape Girardeau is two hours from St. Louis. Align with a home match day or training session — let her experience the facilities, meet the team, and see the vision Coach Klein is building. The proximity makes a visit easy to execute.
03
Evaluate live at ECNL Playoffs. Film is on her YouTube channel. For a live look, the June ECNL Playoffs are the opportunity. Staff presence at a match signals genuine interest and puts her on the radar.
04
Paint the ground-floor picture. The most compelling pitch isn't "come play for us" — it's "come build this with me." Coach Klein's first full recruiting classes will define the next era. Position the 2027 class as the foundation of the program's identity, not just roster depth.
05
Open the scholarship + merit aid conversation. DI scholarship eligibility combined with merit aid for a 4.1 GPA creates a compelling financial package. In-state tuition of ~$28K is already competitive — stacking aid on top makes SEMO's offer punch above its weight.
06
Connect her with STL-area teammates. Laia Amat (Cottleville) and Melissa Kubin (Troy) are already on the roster. A current-player-to-recruit connection from the same metro area makes the transition feel personal and proves SEMO already recruits her community.
Recruiting Window Advisory

A prospect of this caliber — ECNL, 5'11", 4.1 GPA, All-Region, 16 assists from deep — will be visible to every DI program evaluating the 2027 class at ECNL events this spring. The STL coaching connection and in-state advantage are real, but they're not permanent. Every week without engagement is a week another staff fills the gap. A new coach building his first classes can't afford to let a player from his own city slip away.
